Art Letters (Summer 2020):
This project was an effort to support the United States Postal Service. The USPS is a critical mail service that delivers to addresses that are not covered by other services. That means people in rural or marginalized communities often rely on USPS to deliver medication to homes that may not be near a pharmacy. USPS also delivers medications to those with disabilities, as well as veterans. Especially in the pandemic, it was crucial that people are still able to receive treatment. Also, USPS is the mail service tasked with delivering ballots, which was extremely important for the election. Due to covid, many businesses cut back on additional spending, including advertisements and other mail. This contributed to major losses for the post office.
Since USPS does not receive taxpayer money and funds its work by selling stamps, I decided to couple my love of painting with writing letters to anyone you chose! I made mixed media paintings on thick art paper and mailed them in decorated colorful envelopes. Since many of us were still separated from our loved ones, this was a great way to send someone a virtual hug and spread cheer. I really enjoyed this project and the connections through art I was able to help make among friends and family.
